I really don't think racists qualify as ignorant any longer.

Stereotypes are actually rarely couched in ignorance. They're usually couched in observed patterns (with a too small sample), or, better stereotypes are couched in statistical reality.

The first type of stereotype, the observed patterns one fails usually because the sample is too small. If this is ignorance, well, then most of our conclusions in life are ignorant. I'm good with that, but you have to be good with that too for your argument to work.
The second type of stereotype, the statistical reality, is only harmful if applied abjectly and absolutely to everyone of the group. For instance, if it is true that Japanese people are much more likely than other groups to consort with prostitutes, than it is statistically true. That does not mean every Japanese person should be arrested for solicitation, since not every single one performed a positive action and hence, should not be arrested. But, its no crime, and certainly not hateful, to say that statistically Japanese people are more likely to hire a hooker than other groups (if it were true).
Same deal.
You need not hate a group, or a person, to state statistically true stereotypes about that group. If your definition of stereotype excludes 'true' things, than, well, your issue is with slander and libel, not sterotyping.

Evlar is correct though. Today's racists, especially the organized ones, are rarely ignorant. In fact, they usually have a better grasp of 'racial' facts than most people. They just choose to sterotype and then ACT upon said sterotypes. Seperating the two things is rather important, especially if you ever plan to make a generalization about anything ever again.

First off, black man does like chicken. Everyone likes chicken, based on my experience.

Second, white peeps can't dance. I've been to dances and the white people can't dance.

And then find me an Indian who doesn't scalp white settlers and drink fire water and run a casino... i mean, who isn't smart, and then we'll talk.

Really though, i agree. Stereotypes are upsetting. What set you off nightryder23?

I have to admit though, I can watch comedians make fun of stereotypes and find it hilarious. But I also understand how hurtful it can be.

Don't sweat it too much. There are probably always gonna be people that hate just because of stereotypes, and that naturally weeds out the people you don't want to be friends with anyway. It's their loss.

Maybe sometimes the best thing to do is just approach someone about it one on one.

Another thing (sorry there's no real structure here), stereotypes probably have some validity. Our personalities are largely based on our peer groups and families, and also our genes. So, if we hang out with each other, share the same culture, go to the same church, listen to the same music, eat the same foods, play the same games -- a lot of times you can make some pretty safe assumptions about a group in one specific area.

I'm white and I look like kind of geeky (some say mentally handicapped). People always used to assume that I couldn't dance, because they'd never seen a geeky white boy dance. Then Napoleon Dynamite shattered that stereotype and now everywhere I go people expect me to dance for them. I do and everyone starts going crazy throwing money and babies and ripping off their clothes and putting me in a music videos and sponsoring me and throwing money and ripping off clothes because, man, I can dance one they decide to give me the chance.

Seriously, though, nightryder23, I love you. Don't let the system get you down. We're going to F the system. Keep fighting the good fight.

First things first, Galactic, I've seen you dance and it is comparable to a person being attacked by a swarm of killer bees.

With that said, sterotypes can be funny and they can be hurtful, I guess it is all in the route of how they are used. I see people who actually believe in these sterotypes and I am just like 'Wow'. Because that is all I can say in response.
